NEWS RELEASE – Process Water Intake License Approved

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Process Water Intake License Approved

June 10, 2025 – LAMONT, AB: Following the recent approval for Lamont County Water Act Application for a process water intake from the North Saskatchewan River—located at NE 23-057-20-W4, further approval has now been granted by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas to operate water works to supply up to four million cubic metres of water annually for Industrial and Commercial use.

The Water Act License approval (DAT0022845) is posted at lamontcountynow.ca/about-us/area-profile/planning (and is effective May 29, 2025). Administration continues to work with the County’s Owners Representative (WSP) to procure full design, engineering and construction. Lamont County will undertake broad communication and consultation with the community in the months to come.

“Approval to divert water from the North Saskatchewan River for industrial and commercial purposes within Lamont County’s Alberta’s Industrial Heartland area is a critical step toward attracting industrial investment and growing the tax base” said Lamont County Reeve, David Diduck. “This is a major step for Lamont County in the area of economic development."

Previously, Lamont Country was granted $16.67 million to construct an intake for raw water to be drawn from the North Saskatchewan River. This is the next step in the approval processes from the Government of Alberta for process water use within Lamont County’s Designated Industrial Zone (DIZ). Lamont County’s Owner’s Representative, WSP, is assisting in the engineering services for the design, construction, consultation and a management framework for a potential Public-Private Partnership (P3) procurement for this project.

“The Process Water Line license is a key economic driver for Lamont County’s future,” said Diduck. “Having received approval, we will ensure all voices are heard and proceed efficiently and in the best interests of all of Lamont County. This is the largest and most impactful project in the history of Lamont County.”

“Lack of process water access has been the main barrier to new entrants and business investment,” said Lamont County’s Economic Development Manager, Shane Olson. “This opens the door for major industry to invest in Lamont County and to increase the quality of life for our residents will enjoy for many years to come. This is the tip of the iceberg for the future.”

BACKGROUND:
New Process Water for Industrial and Commercial use will drive new investment in one of Canada’s largest industrial zones, (Alberta’s Industrial Heartland). This includes a 582 square kilometre industrial energy cluster with one of Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing centres, and a high traffic location for chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, agricultural, and critical mineral processing investments.

Previously, Lamont County was granted approval to construct the process water intake:

Council will now direct the next steps including engineering designs, studies and partnerships with industry investors requiring water line access from the intake.

Now is the time to invest in Lamont County and Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Lamont County is #ReadyForYou and has #RoomtoGrow.
