A FIRE BAN is issued for Lamont County effective April 23, 2024, at 2:30 p.m. - NEW Off-Highway Restriction and any type of outside burning is prohibited until further notice.

EMERGENCY ALERT - North East Skaro Fire

April 22, 2015

UPDATE: 10:37 a.m.

Early last night (Thursday evening) there were several fire flare-ups:
  1. North of TWP 574 between RR 191 and 192 in heavy bush near the DC power lines. 
  2. South of TWP 580 between RR 191 and 192, cuts were made to provide future access for equipment.
  3. On RR 191 North of TWP 580, dealt with smoldering brush piles and made some cut-lines for equipment access.
Emergency services has been, and will continue to, work in these areas creating fire guards and containing any flare-ups. Vigilance will be required to keep on top of flare-ups in the peat areas. Please be aware that this could be an issue for a while, as peat is tricky to put out. Unless something significant affecting public safety occurs, this will be the last update until Monday. UPDATE: 10:04 a.m.


Lamont County Chief of Emergency Services has stated that the fire remains under control. At this time focus is on addressing hotspots, and using heavy equipment to construct accesses and cut additional fire breaks.

APRIL 19, 2016

UPDATE 9:13 a.m.


Due to extremely dry conditions Lamont County is under a complete fire ban. Please refrain from any open burning.

UPDATE 9:23 a.m.

It is recommended that anyone between Twp. Rds 572 & 582, and RRs 185 & 193 not stay in the area. If you choose to stay, please be prepared to evacuate when notified.

UPDATE 12:51 p.m.

The fire is currently between Twn Rrd 574 and 580, and RR 192 and 191. Emergency services is in the process of containing it, by concentrating on fire breaks and putting out hot spots. Approximately 12-15 square miles has been burned at this point. 2 homes have been lost (1 uninhabited) and 15 outbuildings. Two firefighters have been injured and taken to hospital, and are in stable condition. Stay tuned for more updates as they come in.

UPDATE 1:33 p.m.

The fire has started to move back south, and is now at Twp Rd 573 and RR 193. Anyone in this area is encouraged to leave. Public should avoid the area.

UPDATE 4:05 p.m.


Two spot fires located on Twp Rd. 573 and RR 193 are now out. There is still a fire on RRs 191 and 192, running south of Twp. Rd. 580. Two helicopters are still on site helping with the fire.

UPDATE 8:11 p.m.


The fire has gotten into the peat east of RR 190, south of Twp Rd. 580. Water bombing is happening and will continue until dark. Night crews will be coming out shortlly and will be working on hotspots thorugh the night. The fire is currently burning from Twp Rd. 574 to 580 between RR 192 and 190. This will be the last update provided this evening, unless there is significant change.

UPDATE 8:37 p.m.

The North East Skaro Fire is now being called "Under Control".

April 18, 2016

There is currently a fire around Twp 572 between RR 190 and 191. Please stay away from this general area. Some roads are being barricaded, follow any instructions from emergency services. Emergency services will notify anyone needing to evacuate if necessary, however anyone north of 580 should be prepared. Please stay tuned to this page for updates.

UPDATE - 6:40 p.m.

The fire has moved north of Twp 580 and west of RR 191. Please stay clear of the area and wait for any further instructions. Emergency services is on scene directing traffic and residents.

UPDATE 7:17 p.m.

EMERGENCY ALERT: North East Skaro Fire - Emergency Services has evacuated RRs 185, 190 and 191 North of 580. RRs 192 and 193 North of Twp 580 are now being asked to evacuate. If you feel you are at risk, please leave the area and make your way calmly to Hwy 831.

UPDATE 8:11 p.m.

Anyone who has been displaced and is in need of a place to stay, the Lamont Alliance Church is being set up as a reception center. Please call the main County number at 780-895-2233 to arrange assistance.

UPDATE 9:07 p.m.

UPDATE 9:47 p.m.

Emergency Services have been withdrawn for the night, as it is no longer safe for the fire fighters to work. There will be RCMP patrolling and a water truck present through the night. There are plans to regroup tomorrow morning. Updates will happen if necessary through the night.
