FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Reeve’s 9th Annual Charity Golf Tournament Raises More Than $25,000 for Local Ukrainian Relief!

August 19, 2022 – LAMONT, AB: Lamont County Reeve, David Diduck, is proud to announce this year’s charity golf tournament has raised $25,952.19.

Hosted at the Whitetail Crossing Golf Course in Mundare on August 11, proceeds from the Reeve’s 9th annual tournament directly supports crucial initiatives providing support to displaced Ukrainians within Lamont County.

The funds raised for distribution to specific organizations and initiatives will be finalized and presented at an upcoming Council meeting.

This year, the Reeve’s charity tournament directly supports displaced and relocated Ukrainians across Lamont County and its surrounding communities, helping those in need and families adjusting to relocation to a new country and lifestyle—many of which have been forced to leave their homes and families behind, starting over and becoming part of the local community, newly relocated to Alberta because of the war in Ukraine.

As the Cradle of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada, Lamont County residents have many friends and family members directly touched by the war in Ukraine. It is a challenging time both here and in Ukraine (and its neighbouring countries). We #StandWithUkraine, and with everyone’s support, Lamont County is doing what it can to support local initiatives to aid those in need and affected locally.

There are many opportunities to donate to organizations that offer local support, including the Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Alberta Provincial Council (UCC-APC), which is looking for host families to help displaced Ukrainians. Monetary and physical donations can be provided through the Ed Stelmach Foundation, the UCC-APC or through Vegreville Stands with Ukraine.

“This year’s tournament was a phenomenal success. Thank you to all participants who enjoyed a day of excellent weather, great golf and networking with other tournament attendees,” said Lamont County Reeve, David Diduck. “To all sponsors - thank you for your generous donations! The final tally is still being calculated; however, the amount of money anticipated to be raised will go a long way in supporting local Ukrainian initiatives and displaced families.”

Many records were achieved at this year’s tournament, including 112 participants (as a mix of local residents, vendors, industry and business partners, and community participants) and a significant charitable contribution—with more funds raised than any of the previous nine tournaments. Sponsors and participants, as well as staff volunteers, stepped up and surpassed expectations this year coming back from the Pandemic.

“It was very good to see everyone come out and support the Reeve's tournament, especially as things start to recover from the pandemic," said Tom Koep, Manager of Economic Development with Lamont County. "We had a record number of golfers, sponsors and support this year; and with proceeds going locally for people impacted and displaced by the war in Ukraine, these funds raised go a long way for those in need. We are grateful for our sponsors and participants who came out on such a great day and for a great cause!”

Lamont County appreciates the tournament’s gold/silver/bronze and hole sponsors—our gold sponsors: Cenovus Energy, Keldar Leadership Solutions, Heartland Sulphur and CLH Group Inc., and Mundare’s Whitetail Crossing golf club for hosting the tournament. It was a great day for golf, and participants enjoyed the warm, sunny weather, participating in raffles and other fund-raising opportunities.

Snippets from the tournament:

  • Record Participants: 112 golfers in a Texas scramble best ball format.
  • Champion Team: (it was a tie at 16 under par, but this team scored as winner with a countback from the hole scores) - Steven, Lorne, Shane, Cody.
  • Most Honest Team: (included Lamont County’s MP) - Shannon Stubbs (MP), Tina, Kayla and Sheryl.
  • Unfortunately, no hole-in-one’s: there were prizes from sponsors for a truck and cash prizes on a few of the par-3 holes and a few games from the hole sponsors.
  • Approximately $26,000 raised for local initiatives to aid those in need and affected locally by the war in Ukraine.
