LAMONT COUNTY IN A ‘LOCAL STATE OF AGRICULTURAL DISASTER’

  The Lamont County Council declared during a meeting on June 22, 2009 that the County was in a “Local State of Agricultural Disaster”.  Council based their decision on the fact that farmers have been battling a cool spring, poor germination and emergence, frost damage, and the current lack of rain.  These conditions are resulting in little to no hay or pasture for the livestock sector.  

  Producers in the grain and oilseed industry are waiting to hear from AFSC to determine if their crops can be salvaged for livestock feed.  The County understands that long term damage has been done to the crops producers are depending on, and is not prepared to lose any agricultural producers due to the losses they are faced with.  Council is planning on lobbying both provincial and federal governments for assistance.

Lamont County, AB - On the morning of Monday September 21, 2009, a brush fire started in the northwest corner of Lamont County. The fire is "fully contained" and located between Range Roads 191 and 192, running parallel to Township Road 580 about a ¼ mile south.

The fire is approximately 20 acres in size, but crews are working on containing an area of around 60 acres to try and ensure that it does not spread. There are currently four fire departments involved in the efforts, including those from the Towns of Bruderheim and Lamont, and the Villages of Chipman and Mundare. In addition, there are 2 dozers and a brusher working away at the fire.

More than 20 firefighters from local municipalities are on the scene diligently working to keep this fire in a fully contained state.
